It is at the gates of the Gorges du Verdon that we find Aiguines, a small village in Provence located in Provence Verte and in the heart of the Verdon park, overlooking the lake of Sainte Croix. There are about 280 souls living there year-round, but experiences a population explosion in the summer season due to its proximity to the Lake and the Gorges du Verdon. The village offers magnificent views of the Lac de Sainte Croix and the Valensole plateau.
Aiguines is also known for its craftsmen “wood turners”, an activity in full swing at the beginning of the 20th century and made possible thanks to the surrounding forests rich in boxwood. Famous in particular for studded pétanque balls until 1920, when they lost their appeal with the appearance of the “integral” ball
While strolling in the lanes one can also see, the belfry (square tower with its bell-tower) overhanging the fountain of the village, the parish church Saint Jean, the museum of the turners on wood or the castle (private property) dating from the rebirth renovated towards the end of the 20th century.
Above the village is the chapel of Saint Pierre, with its panorama offering a splendid view of the lake of Sainte Croix and the plateau of Valensole.
Very popular in high season, the village has been able to develop tourism thanks in particular to the many activities offered by the lake of Sainte Croix and the Gorges du Verdon.
There is something for everyone, from simple idleness on the shores of the lake to the most extreme such as paragliding, through water activities (swimming, pedal boating, paddle, canoeing, white water descent, etc…) and land activities (climbing, hiking or biking, bungee jumping, etc.)
For a weekend or for the holidays, this charming village in Provence is to be discovered or rediscovered.
